Embracing the Introvert Advantage: The Quiet Power of Ghostwriters

"You are so quiet; you barely say a word." 

I cannot remember now who said that to me. I know that many times, as I was growing up, people would comment that I was quiet. It might have been a self-esteem boost had the comment centered on my love of reading and writing poetry and my preference to listen to other people's stories rather than talk about myself. 

" Boy, you are a good listener" would have been an ego boost. 

Now I understand that I am an introvert by nature. It's not just an aspect of my personality, it's really at the core of who I am. Introverts tend to be inward-focused. They draw energy from their internal thoughts and reflections. They 

enjoy solitude and need time alone to recharge. They have a rich internal life and enjoy their own company. 

My career has been a mix of introvert and extrovert activities. There is an evolution from computer programmer, for me, an introvert's career, to project manager to volunteer on global think tank efforts with the Project Management Institute (PMI). I presented at conferences (after earning a few Toastmasters certifications). I led teams and participated in the management of small business entrepreneurial endeavors. I was in sales and sold real estate for ten years. And now, within my career as a ghostwriter, I love to network and talk about my business and develop relationships with my colleagues.  

And yet, at the core of it, my introverted tendencies serve my clients well for the following reasons. 

Deep Reflection and Insight

One key strength of introverts is their ability to engage in deep introspection. Connecting with clients' emotional nuances and stories takes effort, caring, and perseverance. Translating these intricate feelings and stories into powerful written expressions to ensure their stories resonate with their intended audience is at the heart of ghostwriters' skills.

Introverts are known for being exceptional listeners, an invaluable skill in the ghostwriting process. They can absorb information without interjecting themselves into the conversation. They understand their clients' needs, desires, and perspectives. The sense of empathy enables introverts to step into the shoes of others, crafting narratives that not only tell a story but evoke genuine emotions. The result is writing that reflects the client's voice, feels personal and relatable, and goes beyond surface-level details.

Mastery of Solitude

Solitude is a welcoming place for an introvert to get their work done. Extroverts thrive in social interactions, while introverts recharge in quiet contemplation. Ghostwriters dive deep into their work by eliminating distractions. The ability to embrace silence and transform it into a story is an advantage ghostwriters bring to their profession. 

Strong Research Skills

Introverts are naturally curious. These fundamental traits lend themselves to the research-intensive nature of ghostwriting. Whether delving into a new industry, exploring diverse perspectives, or gathering information to create a compelling narrative, introverted ghostwriters approach research with a meticulous and thorough mindset. This mindset ensures the final product is well-written, accurate, and informative. 

Effective Communication in Writing

At first glance, you may overlook an introvert in a room, yet they often shine when expressing themselves in writing. Ghostwriting relies heavily on the written word to convey ideas, emotions, and narratives. Introverts excel at articulating thoughts and feelings on paper. This skill is crucial in ensuring that the client's message is heard, understood, and felt by the intended audience.

Starting my life as an introvert and living in that space exclusively for a few decades before stretching and reaching for career growth opportunities and speaking engagements provided the foundation to build my superpower.
